Tax season, sigh, it's here.  Time to dig through my files wondering yet again why I didn't take the time to organize it while I was filing it.  It's a guessing game as to what information they want and can I find it!  If you are feeling lost with the tax process there are people available to help at the Duluth Public Library!

Here's a couple options, pick the one that's best for you:

First of all you can use UMD Student Volunteers.  Obviously they've just learned the latest information needed to know to complete tax forms.  They are from the Accounting Department at UMD and will be in the Main Library’s Gold Room (520 W. Superior St.) begining Saturday, February 7.  They'll be available to you starting that Saturday through April 6.   Saturdays from 10-4 and Mondays from 2-7,  except during the UMD spring break week.  Assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you've already got your information together and are ready to roll, (lucky) there will be free in-person tax help from Community Action Duluth at the Duluth Public Library.  That help will be available on Friday, January 30 between 10 am and 2 pm in the Main Library Computer Lab.  That's the day that marks the 40th anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Community Action Duluth has partnered with the library and Claim it!, a Minnesota awareness campaign to make sure that no taxpayer leaves credits unclaimed, to provide free electronic tax filing to households with income of $60,000 or less.

If you are in need of tax forms, the Duluth Public Library can help with that too!  Copies of the basic federal 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ forms, as well as Minnesota state forms and instructions, will be available at the Main Library (top floor), Mt. Royal Branch Library and West Duluth Branch Library. Additional forms and instructions can be found online, and the library will let people print 10 pages without charge. The IRS is not providing the library with instruction booklets for the basic forms.

Copies may also be requested by calling 1-800-829-3676.
