The rough winter and late arrival of nice weather has pushed off pothole repair around the Twin Ports, but crews in Duluth have been out in force to try to fix as many potholes as possible. This year, they got a little extra help courtesy of a nationwide campaign from Domino's Pizza.

Last year, Domino's ran a "Paving For Pizza" campaign, offering to give money to cities to fix potholes. In the campaign, the company said "Potholes, cracks, and bumps in the road can cause irreversible damage to your pizza during the drive home from Domino’s. We can’t stand by and let your cheese slide to one side, your toppings get un-topped, or your boxes flipped. We’re helping to pave bad roads in all 50 states so that you can get your pizza home smoothly, no matter where you carry out."

Duluth was selected as one of the cities to receive funding from Domino's, being awarded $5,000 last November to put toward pothole repair. The key stipulations were that the money must be used to fill potholes, and potholes must be filled by July 1, 2019.

The City of Duluth shared via social media Wednesday a general message about the efforts to quickly repair city streets to make them as smooth and safe as possible, but also called out Domino's for their "unique public/private relationship" that made Wednesday's paving efforts possible. Among the places the city was working was Superior Street and 20th Avenue West, where the photo above was taken.

The post also pointed out a recently-approved 0.5% sales tax that is dedicated specifically to road repairs, saying they look forward to the additional funding to help make street repairs.

Also worth noting, if you know of some bothersome potholes you'd like to see filled (or some other street maintenance issues that need tending to), the City of Duluth does have a street maintenance submission page on their website to alert crews to areas that need attention. If you're curious, Duluth was the only Minnesota city selected as they set out to help fix streets in each state around the country. They have either paved, or will be soon helping with paving in the following cities around the region:

  • Minnesota: Duluth - Paving Now
  • Wisconsin: Milwaukee - Paved
  • North Dakota: Grand Forks - Paved
  • South Dakota: Rapid City - Paving Soon
  • Iowa: Des Moines - Paved
  • Michigan: Hamtramck - Paved
