Just like sweeping dirt from your kitchen floor under the rug, it's easiest to sweep dirt from your boulevard or driveway right out in the middle of the street.  But, the City of Duluth is asking that you use the Sand Collection Sites that are set up, here's why.

The City of Duluth wants to remind residents to not sweep the sand from their sidewalks, driveways or boulevards into city streets. The best way to dispose of the sand is to sweep it up and bring it to one of the eight dump sites that Utility Operations has set up around Duluth for your convenience.

City crews sweep road sand off the streets as quickly as possible in the spring, and any additional help from citizens is

greatly appreciated. If it is not picked up before the spring rains, the sand washes into our streams and can damage trout habitat.

The collection sites are marked with black silt fencing and are open to all Duluth residents to dump road sand

from their sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Sites are located at the following locations:

34th Ave East and Valley Drive

Chester Bowl

Duluth Heights Community Club

Lester Park

Piedmont Community Center

Stowe School

Wheeler Field

Woodland Community Center

Please watch for a flier in your April Comfort Systems utility bill for more information about this program. Catch basins lead directly to our streams and Lake Superior, not to the wastewater treatment plant. Please do not dump anything into them. Contact the City of Duluth at 730-4130 during business hours or 730-4100 on evenings and weekends to report any illegal discharge or dumping.

For additional information regarding this program, please contact Project Coordinator Chris Kleist at (218) 730-4063 or (218) 355-0598.
