Better Business Bureau Issues Alert For Yet Another Texting Scam
It seemingly never ends! The Better Business Bureau is warning of yet another scam and this one involves text messaging and scammers posing as someone else. Sigh.
It should come as no surprise that scams have been on the rise over the past few years. Even throughout the pandemic, scammers were finding ways to cash in, whether involving stimulus checks or vaccinations, there was always something up their sleeves.
Interestingly enough, the Better Business Bureau just shared a scary statistic about scams. According to the BBB, online scams rose nearly ninety percent between 2015 and this year alone. Wow.
The fact that we live our lives from our phone makes it easy for scammers to take advantage of people. Add that to the fact that we are constantly distracted from one thing or another and it is a recipe for disaster.
This is a good example of a scam you might fall for because you are distracted! The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be aware of a common scam, where scammers pretend to be your mom! Yes, this is a real scam.
The reason it is easy to fall for something like this is because scammers are using spoofing technologies to make it seem like it really is a family member, like your mom or dad. According to the BBB, they pose as a close family number, spoof the number and then proclaim that they are out and about and need money because they left theirs at home.
Because most people have their parents saved in their phone under "mom" or "dad" scammers are able to trick people easier. You know what happens from there: you send money digitally and never get it back.
As a good rule of thumb, never send money to anyone, even those that you think might be your mom or dad. Instead, take a minute and reach out to them and avoid a big hassle in the future. Even if something looks legitimate, it's never a bad idea to confirm things before taking action.
Recently, the town of Good Thunder, Minnesota warned residents of yet another scam. This scam is scary in that the victim gets a call from a male, telling them they are on their way to their house to collect the cash they are owed. Thankfully, this is just a scam, although a scary one.
