There are so many scams going around these days, it can be hard to tell up from down. There is always a scam going around and some I have even come close to falling for myself.

It doesn't help that scams come in all shapes and sizes these days: emails or calls that can be spoofed or made to look real. There are even text message scams!

The newest scam going around Minnesota comes courtesy of email, which makes it hard to tell if it is real or fake. It is easy for scammers to manipulate something to look real with AI.

This was first reported by the Fairbault County Sheriff's Office, who warned of the scam earlier this month on their official Facebook page.

Fairbault County Sheriff's Office Warns Of New Email Scam

According to their warning post, a fake email scam has been circulating in that area. The email targets residents in that region (for now) and includes a phone number for their 'office' that you are instructed to call.

The email causes panic, making you put down your guard and rush to trying to 'fix' the problem. The email says that the United States District Court is suspending your Social Security number because of 'illegal' actions you did in another state.

In this particular instance, that state is Texas. The email continues by telling the person who opened it that there are charges against them and a lawsuit has been filed against them as well. Wow! That's intense.

The phone number is of course fake, although they say it is for the Office of the Inspector General. A quick Google search will show it is a fake number, with someone posing as the Inspector General to talk you into giving them money and who knows what else.

I definitely worry about the older people in my life falling for something like this. If you come across something that seems fishy, do a quick Google search and more often than not, you will see that it is a scam.
