What's the ideal temperature to set your air conditioner at? It varies by person, but experts say there's a temperature to set your air conditioner at that's the most efficient. But you probably won't like it.

People across the entire United States were surveyed on what their ideal air conditioner setting is. Most people agree on setting the temp at 72 degrees. The United States Department of Energy doesn't agree with that. Apparently, they like it hotter.

Expert Recommended Setting While You're At Home

DOE recommends that you set your a/c unit to 78 degrees. Yes, that's right, nearly 80 degrees is what they consider efficiently cool. I'm sweating just thinking about 78 degrees. That's hot!

Expert Recommended Setting While You're Away

Seriously, who the heck can sleep when it's 82 degrees? I set the temperature down to 68 degrees to sleep. It's worth paying the extra money on my utility bill to get a good night's sleep. However, the DOE says that when you're sleeping is a perfect time to save some energy and money on your bill.

Consider A Programmable Thermostat

You can save some cash by setting the temperature to automatically change during the day. Whatever settings you prefer, just program them to be warmer while you are away, and cooler when you need it. Don't make the mistake of turning off your A/C on hot days; just adjust the temperature.
