Young Americans Buying Less & Driving Less Vehicles

The day I turned 16, I took my driver's license test.  From the day onward, I was now forever hooked to a car.  I got my first job so I could pay the high insurance cost just for me to drive.  I was now paying for gas, vehicle maintenance, and everything else in between.  A lot of the youth nowadays don't want to do that. 

Recent surveys show that quite a few Generation Y Americans are relying on public transportation, or their bicycles.

From 2001 to 2009, the average annual number of vehicle-miles traveled by people ages 16-34 dropped 23 percent, from 10,300 to 7,900, the survey found. Gen Y-ers, also known as Millennials, tend to ride bicycles, take public transit and rely on virtual media.

You can read the full article at yahoo.com, but I will say one thing.  Locally I still think the majority of youth is excited about driving and getting their license.  But who knows, maybe if public transportation continues to improve, our area could mimic larger cities and the young people's habits in 10 years?
