Work Begins On New Stadium In Superior With Demolition Of Ole Haugsrud Field

I heard a noise yesterday at my house that sounded like a trainwreck. I went to investigate what it was and found heavy equipment working away at the old Ole Haugsrud field.

The excavators were tearing down the old stadium bleachers at the field. It's part of the new stadium that will be opening in September. It will be called Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium and will be home to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. Both the men's and women's soccer teams will play on the field, and also the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams.

The Superior Choice Credit Union gave a historic gift to Yellowjacket Athletics, and therefore will hold naming rights to the facility. They also have naming rights to the standing area and lounge area at Wessman Arena.

University of Wisconsin-Superior Director of Athletics Nick Bursik commented on the partnership,

"This project will mark one of the largest investments we've made into our outdoor facilities over the past several decades. We pride ourselves on offering a high-quality student-athlete experience, and this new stadium will further evaluate our abilities to support our student-athletes and enhance the visibility and profile of our university,"

Demolition was set to begin in the spring, but bleachers began actually coming down at the end of June 2023.
