The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District’s Yard Waste Compost Site is busy and wants to accommodate the increased traffic.

WLSSD announced on their website, they will expand the number of days they are open to 5. They made the decision after the number of people increased that are dropping off bags of yard waste this fall. So the hours look like this. Thursday to Monday from 9 am to 4 pm.

WLSSD said they will keep those hours until November 16th, which is a Monday. They said they have noticed more people are cleaning up their yards. I would imagine with people working at home they are outside cleaning up more, raking in the leaves and bagging them. Plus people were growing their own food. People have regular leaves, but they also have garden waste, fruit and veggie waste, pumpkins from carving early, and there is a constant flow of grass.

WLSSD went on to say they take brush at the yard waste site. They said they do have to charge to cover the costs of chipping. All the collecting will lead to a great compost for next year they said because people will probably still grow their own food again next year.

Just a reminder, WLSSD opens for a short time in December and January to collect Christmas Trees. Otherwise, the facility opens in April.
