With Warmer Weather, Be Extra Wary Of Going Out On Ice and Follow DNR Ice Thickness Recommendations

It's been a pretty mild week, with the warmest day potentially Thursday.  Thursday will start nice and sunny, with a hi temp near 40 degrees before a potential rain and ice event hits Thursday night into Friday and then changes to snow.  With warm temps comes an increased danger of going out onto the ice.  A safe spot you were fishing on on one day could turn into a danger zone the next.

The Northland's NewsCenter posted a story that reminds us of how thick ice should be before venturing out onto it.

The official DNR clear ice minimum thickness recommendations are:
- 4 inches for walking.
- 5 inches for a snowmobile or ATV.
- 8-12 inches for a car.
- 12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.

Also, keep in mind that when the temperature rises above freezing for six hours during a 24 hour period, people should double the recommended minimum thicknesses. If temperatures rise above freezing for 24 hours or more, they should stay off the ice.
