Living in the Northland, there are just some items that are considered essential to make it through one of our lengthy winters - items that you may not even think about if you're not from around here.  That's where we've got your back.  As the season gets ready to change - plunging us into six months of cold temperatures and plenty of snow, we put our heads together to determine what is truly needed to tackle a harsh Minnesota/Wisconsin winter.  Here are the items we came up with to build your very own Northland Winter Starter Kit.

Dress in layers.  That's usually some of the first advice given to newbies to the Northland when it comes to winter fashion.  And what better way to add layers than at the initial point-of-contact; that's where thermal long underwear comes in handy.  Natives call 'em "long johns"; you'll call them "warm".

It's bad enough driving your car or truck on the snow and ice-covered roads.  But what about when they won't start?  Cold temperatures wreak havoc on car batteries and those that are under-powered or at the end of their life cycle often don't want to crank the engine over.  Most Northlanders own at least one pair of jumper cables to use in those sort of situations.

If you've lived through a Northland winter, you might have the impression that snow can be "fun" and brings "opportunities" to ski in it, sled on it, and make snowmen with it.  While all of that is true, that novelty usually wears off after the first snowfall - right after you've spent and hour or two shoveling the sidewalk, driveway, and your car out.  Proper gear for snow removal is necessary.  Many people own snowblowers but everyone owns at least one good snow shovel.

Ever heard the phrase "you say potato, I say po-tot-oh"?  Well, you might have eaten potato chips before but in the Northland, those chips had better say Old Dutch on them.  What better item to dip into your Top the Tater?  And, what better item to snack on as the long, harsh winter rolls past.
