Things I Learned From My First PlayStation Network ‘Outage’, Your PS4 Becomes A Brick
I got home from work yesterday and I had a precious 2 hours of time before I needed to pick up the kids from school and be a functional adult again. So what did that mean? It was Star Wars Battlefront time. 2 full hours of blasting my way across the galaxy. In reality, it would be more like getting shot a bunch as I'm kinda a noob to the game. However, I couldn't connect to the network! What!? Turns out this isn't so uncommon, and as a new member to Playstation Network I can't say that makes me very comfortable.
They were really vague about what was going on. In fact I unplugged my router and reset my internet connection trying to see if that was the problem, because I didn't see any notifications.
So it became clear that I couldn't play Battlefront online. That's ok, right? I'll just continue my Madden '16 franchise mode. Oh wait, that's right... you need to be connected to the network to even play the franchise mode. Nuts.
So next I went to a game that I downloaded from the Playstation Network just yesterday. To my knowledge, it was purchased and downloaded to my hard drive. I clicked to play, and that wouldn't work either. Seriously!?!?! This PS4 has now become a glorified Roku player for the time being.
So basically when you build your entire revenue making machine around a network that supports every single unit sold to your customers, you better be sure it's protected and works. It's something we pay for. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't make it so VITAL that you have a PlayStation network subscription.
I'm not sure how long it was down for everyone, but I know that it was out for me from Noon until 9pm. That's a problem, Playstation. Better get some more nerds at work.
