It's never too early to start thinking about your taxes.  The 2020 deadline for filing your 2021 federal and state income taxes is Monday, April 18, 2022.  If you have plans to not meet that deadline, you would need to file a form to obtain an extension prior to the deadline.

Most people file those mandatory tax forms in a variety of ways.  While paper forms still exist and are readily available for those who feel confident enough to navigate them, others turn to electronic versions.  And while some people plow through the calculations on their own using commercially-available tax preparation software, others turn to tax preparers for help.

Similarly, tax prep help comes in a variety of methods - from appointments with accountants who can help you plot your way through complicated tax situations to simple "answer a few questions and walk out the door" types.  Often, though, that tax preparation help comes with a fee attached.

For a number of years, Wisconsin residents have had access to free tax help via the TaxAide program.  While it's not operated by the Superior Public Library, that is the building in which it has been located.  That free tax help service is back this year.

According to an article in the Superior Telegram [paywall], "(c)ertified, experienced volunteers will be preparing personal taxes from 12 Noon to 4:00 PM every Monday and Thursday, February 7 through April 7".

The free tax help is available via an advanced sign up on four specific dates:

  • January 20:  10:30 AM to 12 Noon
  • January 26  10:30 AM to 12 Noon
  • January 31:  10:30 AM to 12 Noon
  • January 27:  12 Noon to 2:00 PM

The tax help is partially funded via an arrangement with AARP.  However, there is no age or income limit.  They're able to help tax payers prepare federal, Wisconsin taxes, Wisconsin Homesteads, and Minnesota income taxes for Wisconsin residents.
