Superior Public Schools Get Altered Later Start Times For 2019-2020
At a school board meeting held at a different location than usual, the Superior School Board voted on May 13 to change the public schools' bell times (class times) for the next school year (2019-2020). The vote will now see some schools starting as late as 9:15 AM - however the high school will see no movement on start time. At the same time, many bus routes will now combine elementary school students with middle- and high-school students - something that hadn't previously occurred.
To defend the move, the board offered transportation issues as the common cause - describing long bus routes. The new routes will also offer bus drivers more flexibility to "take sick time and personal time". You can read the districts reasoning on the memo circulated to board members by clicking here.
While news reports of the change have been few and far between, the action has created a conversational buzz around Superior. Many parents are concerned about the altered start time. The workday for most parents starts at 8:00 AM; a 9:15 AM school start time will create numerous issues for many families - and could potentially leave many young children unattended and unsupervised as they wait for the school day to start. There are also concerns about the large age-range of the combined busing situation.
It should be noted that the new altered start times affect only the public schools listed; parochial schools are not affected by the actions of the Superior School District.
Here are the new bell times for Superior's 2019-2020 school year:
- Lake Superior & Four Corners: 9:15 AM - 3:45 PM
- Bryant, Cooper, Great Lakes, Northern Lights: 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
- Superior Middle School: 8:00 AM - 3:05 PM
- Superior High School: 7:55 AM - 3:06 PM
