Superior Mayor Jim Paine took to social media Thursday morning to share excitement about the 2021 summer season and a slate of things to look forward to in the city.

Mayor Paine opened his remarks, acknowledging that while a normal summer is well deserved after the last year and change, but he says "I think we can do better than that".

The first thing Mayor Paine mentioned is that the Superior Summer Playground Program will be brought back starting Monday, June 14, running through Friday, August 20. The Summer Playground Program offers supervised outdoor fun for children ages 5-11 weekdays from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm at 6 sites across Superior. Those locations include:

  • 18 Oaks -  1725 Oakes Avenue
  • Billings Park - 15 Billings Drive
  • Central Park - 717 6th Avenue East
  • Hammond Park - 1920 Hammond Avenue
  • Wade Bowl - 1228 Clough Avenue
  • Webster Dream Park - 5718 Tower Avenue

Along with CPR & first aid-trained supervision staff, the city has partnered with the Superior School District to offer free lunch and a snack program for participants as well as non participants under the age of 18.

Registration for this program is required, and can be done through the City of Superior's website.

Along with this program, Mayor Paine shared Bayside Sounds is back starting in July, with 8 shows scheduled in parks across Superior "so that every neighborhood will host a concert within walking distance".

The final part of Mayor Paine's announcement was a full return of the city's 4th of July festivities, calling this year's "our biggest 4th of July yet". He explained the city's parade will return in full form to Downtown Superior and "a huge party" on Barkers Island with fireworks over the water are also on the docket for this year.

Duluth announced earlier this year that fireworks and other Fourth Fest festivities including music would be back at Bayfront this year, which means that both sides of the bridge look to be returning to a sense of normalcy for Independence Day 2021.
