Superior Establishes Park Bench Sponsorship Program
Getting a bench installed in memory of a loved one in a city park in Superior has just gotten easier. The Park and Recreation Commission just approved a program that streamlines the process for families at their meeting on August 26. That process will now move on for a vote with the Superior City Council at their next meeting on September 7 with approval expected.
With the process in place, families or organizations can have a bench installed and fitted with a memorial plaque. There is a choice between 4-foot or 6-foot lengths; the actual final design of the bench needs to be approved an a case by case basis to "match others in the surrounding area".
Cost to the purchaser ranges from "$2,000 to $3,000, depending on the style and length of the bench". According to an article in the Superior Telegram, that purchase price is fully contained. City of Superior Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Linda Cadotte offered that "[t]he cost of the pad is roughly $800 to $1,000 and that was factored in".
While the program will allow for bench purchases all year long, the actual memorial benches would be installed at the parks during the summer months - June to August. City crews will perform the prep and placement work.
The memorial benches are guaranteed to remain placed on site for at least ten years, providing longevity to the families and the purchasers. They also come with a one year guarantee against defects and workmanship.
Vandalism is another issue. According to the details released with the program, the city will not be "responsible for replacing vandalized benches".
