Apply Now For Special Deer Hunt At Sandhill Wildlife Area In Wisconsin
Named after the series of gently rolling sandy ridges that crisscross the property, the Sandhill State Wildlife Area in Wisconsin is an impressive 9,150-acre property that is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources employees.
The property boasts a unique 9-foot deer-proof fence, which creates an ideal environment for wildlife research. The DNR notes that while special permits and restrictions are in place within the fenced area of the property, visitors are welcome to enter through the designated entrance gates to explore and recreate.
Throughout the year, the area provides a variety of educational activities with wildlife staff, volunteers, and guest instructors conducting various workshops, primarily on weekends. A shooting range, trails, and opportunities for supervised hunting and trapping experiences are also a part of the outdoor skills programs.

There is also a public firearm deer hunt every year on the property, and now is the time to apply for the 2025 hunt.
Apply Now For Special Firearm Deer Hunt At Sandhill State Wildlife Area
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced this week it is accepting applications now through Monday, Sept. 22, for a special firearm deer hunt at Sandhill State Wildlife Area.
The DNR says this managed hunt provides a unique opportunity to hunt deer on the property while helping them meet deer management objectives. This hunt will be open to licensed hunters and restricted to firearms (rifle/shotgun).
“This year’s permit levels will be established to maintain the deer population at last year’s post-hunt density while also balancing the adult sex ratio of the herd,” said Darren Ladwig, DNR wildlife biologist.
The two-day hunt is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, and Sunday, November 9. Hunters will be issued either an either-sex permit or an antlerless-only permit valid for the Sandhill State Wildlife Area.
It's important to note that successful applicants will be required to follow special hunting rules and regulations for the Sandhill State Wildlife Area. The special hunting rules will be emailed to accepted applicants. Additionally, all harvested deer must be tested for CWD on-site at the in-person registration station.
