Proctor High School Football Investigation Heads To County Attorney
The next step has been taken in the investigation into allegations surrounding the Proctor High School football team. Monday afternoon (October 25), confirmation came that the investigation has been referred to the St. Louis County Attorney's Office.
Last week, the City of Proctor updated the community that the police and school investigation was "nearing completion"; this news that it has hit the desk of the county attorney is the natural progression of any potential case.
Our news partners at WDIO offered St. Louis County Attorney Kimberly Maki's comments on the referral:
"This office will conduct a thorough and careful review of the evidence before making any charging decisions. The County Attorney's Office is aware of the community's interest and desire to see timely results of the criminal investigation. The charging decisions will be made carefully and without undue delay. Given the amount of evidence to review, it is impossible to commit to a specific timeline."
The county attorney's office also shared that this will probably be the only commentary offered at this stage of the investigation; they will "not provide further comment and will not respond to additional inquires at this time".
Origins of this investigation into allegations of misconduct within the Proctor High School football team first came to light over a month ago. WDIO reports that "[t]he Proctor School District first confirmed September 22 that an investigation into the alleged student misconduct was underway. A week later, the district announced that the football team's season had ended. Head Coach Derek Parendo later resigned from his teaching and coaching positions."
While there has been an intense interest in the case from the community and on social media, there have been no direct comments made on the nature of the allegations in question.
