UPDATE: NWS Duluth Forecasts Severe Storms, Tornado August 16th

UPDATE: The National Weather Service of Duluth says severe weather is still possible as of Wednesday morning (August 16th). Wind gusts up to 70 mph still possible with new threats of torrential rain and a tornado.

If you thought summer was basically over in Minnesota, think again. Not only are we looking at a nice warmup this week across the region but we also have the possibility of severe weather on Wednesday (August 16).

It seems like we haven't seen as many storms as we usually do during a summer in our neck of the woods. That will change midweek, as the National Weather Service of Duluth forecasts the potential for severe storms throughout the afternoon and evening.

Of course, things can always change and do often in the area, thanks in big part to Lake Superior. At the time of writing however, the National Weather Service of Duluth says we are shaping up to see "strong to severe" storms we should be prepared for.

Threats include strong winds up to 70 mph and hail up to an inch and a half in diameter. Heavy rainfall may also be an issue depending on how things shape up. It should be noted that all of this is conditional, per the NWS. How severe conditions get depends on what happens when the cold front passes through and how much instability develops along with it.

As mentioned, it's no secret Lake Superior has a big impact on severe thunderstorms and snowstorms, so it is entirely possible the big body of water pushes things a different way as often is the case.

They are forecasting the storms to hit between noon on Wednesday lasting through early morning hours on Thursday. As we brace for some possibly severe weather, it is a good reminder to make sure you are prepared.

The 15 Least Snowy Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 15 winters with the lowest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "least snowy winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
