It's no secret to us that the Northland is the home of amazing beer.  Now, a national study has ranked Duluth as one of the best cities in America for beer drinkers.

SmartAssett.com conducted the study, which encompassed 384 cities across the United States, and Duluth finished tied in 24th place with Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Duluth finished ahead of Minneapolis, who came in 30th.

The study considered all the cities included in the Census 1-year American Community Survey (i.e. with a population of 60,000+) with at least one brewery and available Numbeo data.

That got them to a total of 384 cities, which they then compared using the following metrics:

  • Total number of breweries. Data comes from ratebeer.com and was pulled in November 2020.
  • Number of breweries per 100,000 residents. Data on microbreweries and brewpubs comes from ratebeer.com and was pulled in November 2020. Data on population comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 1-year American Community Survey and is measured at the county level.
  • Average number of beers per brewery. Data comes from ratebeer.com and was pulled in November 2020.
  • Number of bars per 100,000 residents. Data on bars comes from the 2018 County Business Patterns Survey. Data on population comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 1-year American Community Survey and is measured at the county level.
  • Average price for a pint of domestic draught beer. Data comes from Numbeo.com and was pulled in November 2019.

Cincinnati, Ohio came out on top as the overall best city in America for beer drinkers.  Also, it's likely not surprising that Wisconsin had three cities land in the top 20.
