MN DNR: 2021 Summer Most Deadly For Boaters In Over A Decade
The Minnesota Department Of Natural Resources is warning Minnesotans to be safe on the water. There have been more deaths from drowning while boating at this point in a season than there has been in over a decade. Not only has boating been particularily deadly, but drownings overall are well above average.
It's been a mild spring and warm beginning to the summer, so obviously people are heading out to the lakes. There also is a lifeguard shortage nationwide which also doesn't help matters.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers the following tips to keep you safe this summer.
- Make safety your number 1 priority around water
- Know what water you are jumping into, and what's beneath the water.
- Swim only in designated areas
- Be aware of currents, waves, and wakes created by boats
- Children and adults who aren't strong swimmers shoudl wear a life jacket anytime they're around the water. Even if you are a good swimmer, wear your life jacket
They also provide resources on their website for safety information while boating. Don't drink and boat - 30% of fatal accidents on water involve alcohol. Any children under the age of 10 are required by law to wear a lifejacket while a boat is underway. Make sure your life jacket is Coast Guard approved and fits correctly.
Fourth of July Weekend is coming up which is an exceptionally busy time on Minnesota Lakes. Let's have fun and celebrate, but also be safe on Minnesota waters.
