Weather in the area was well into the 80's, and the children were unresponsive and in "medical distress" due to the extreme heat inside the vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a car can heat up by 20 degrees inside in just 10 minutes.

One of the boys was transported to the UMCM in Hibbing and was listed as in stable condition as of the morning of August 10.

The other boy was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. He is listed in critical condition. The police do not expect foul play, however an investigation is underway. Other departments assisting in the call were the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Chisholm Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Hibbing Fire Department.

While the cause of this is still under investigation, it's still important to note that it is crucial to check your backseat before you exit your car. Since 1998 there have been 900 child fatalities due to heatstroke in the United States from kids being left in a car. It's a horrific tragedy and something that can be prevented.

Let's all hope and pray that both children will fully recover from this incident.
