Minnesota’s Lindsay Whalen Retiring From WNBA
Legendary Minnesota basketball player Lindsay Whalen has announced she will be retiring from the WNBA and will focus on coaching the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Whalen was recently named the head coach of the Golden Gophers women's basketball team and had intended to do that while still being a member of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, but she will instead focus squarely on her coaching career.
Watching college basketball over the years, there are two point guards that always come to mind because they stood out for their dynamic plays and hustle. One was Jason Kidd, who was a member of the Cal Bears, and the other was Lindsay Whalen with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
She only got better when she entered the WNBA. According to StarTribune.com,
Whalen will retire as the all-time winningest player in league history. In 15 seasons she has been a part of 322 wins, easily the most in league history. Add to that her 54 playoff wins — 40 with the Lynx and 14 with a Suns team that made two trips to the finals with her in 2004 and ’05. That is second in league history only to teammate Rebekkah Brunson. The Lynx have won 71.4 percent of their games since Whalen came back home to Minnesota, via trade, in 2010.
She also played in an NCAA Final Four, won two Olympic gold medals and won four WNBA championships.
It will be fun to watch Lindsay Whalen take charge and bring her skills to the coaching world at her alma mater.
