A Promising 26-Year-Old Minnesota Twins Player Is Retiring
It's no trick and certainly not a treat for Minnesota Twins fans. Halloween brought the surprising news that a player who was once considered a top prospect in the Twins organization has announced his retirement.
Alex Kirilloff has spent nine seasons playing professional baseball within the Minnesota Twins organization. Kirilloff has played 249 games in the big leagues for the Twins, but due to injuries, he has reportedly never played more than 88 games in a season.
What a shame that a player with so much promise and ability has had to make this decision so early in his career, but when you look at what he's been through it's understandable.
Alex Kirilloff Spent 4 Injury-Plagued Seasons With The Minnesota Twins
In the 2016 Major League Baseball amateur draft, Kirilloff was the #15 pick. He represented the Twins in the 2018 Futures Game and for multiple minor league seasons he was a top 100 MLB prospect.
As a Minnesota Twin, he has a .248 career batting average with 27 homers and 116 RBI.
However, injuries have prevented him from reaching his true potential. He's dealt with a complex surgery on his right wrist, a shoulder injury in 2023, and then a season-ending back surgery this season.

Those injuries have taken their toll on his body and passion for the game.
Kirilloff Announces His Retirement On Halloween
Kirilloff announced his retirement in a heartfelt message on Instagram just ahead of his 27th birthday on November 9.
He states that while baseball has always been a 'cornerstone' of his life, the numerous injuries have forced his hand as he has been forced for new ways to "overcome the pain."
He goes on to say:
"These challenges have taken a toll on me mentally and physically; over time, I’ve realized that my passion for playing the game has shifted. Baseball demands an ‘all-in’ approach, something I’ve brought to every season. However, I can no longer give it the total commitment it requires. I’ve always believed that playing this game requires 110% effort, and anything less would not do justice to my teammates, coaches, fans, or the game itself."
He also states how grateful he is for all the support he's received from his wife, family, friends, teammates, coaches, staff, and fans.
The Minnesota Twins responded with a social media post of its own, thanking Alex for his time with the organization and wishing him the best in his future endeavors.
