A Minnesota Landmark Was Named One Of The Most Beautiful In America
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder because we all have different tastes and lifetime experiences that influence what we find truly beautiful.
While that is certainly true, there is also a mathematical principle that is often associated with aesthetic beauty. This principle can be used to determine the beauty of a face or even a location or landmark.
This mathematical principle is called the golden ratio, and it's used in art, photography, and architecture to create aesthetically balanced compositions.
According to experts, the golden ratio, also known as the "phi" or Fibonacci sequence (after the 13th-century Italian mathematician), is a mathematical principle where the ratio between two quantities is approximately 1:1.618.
Recently, a study applied the golden ratio to determine where the most beautiful landmarks are in America, and one happens to be in Minnesota.
Finding The Most Beautiful Landmarks In America
Utilizing the golden ratio, Level Frames set out to find the most beautiful landmarks in the country. They note that many U.S. landmarks, like the Empire State Building and the White House, are popular subjects for framed photos and art, but they wanted to dig deeper and find where all the most beautiful local landmarks are located.

After using the mathematical formula behind nature’s most harmonious designs, the top 5 most beautiful local landmarks were determined to be:
- Giant Eagle Waterfall Nest in Idaho Falls, Idaho
- Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina
- Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois
- Nevada State Capitol in Carson City, Carson City
The 8th Most Beautiful Landmark In America Is In Minnesota
While no local landmark in Minnesota cracked the Top 5, the state did have one crack the Top 10.
According to its website, the Cathedral of Saint Paul in St. Paul, Minnesota, is a 'significant architectural landmark and a symbol of the city's Catholic history. Its history spans from the earliest log chapel to the grandeur of the current building, which was completed in 1915.'

If you've ever seen this Minnesota landmark in person, you would certainly agree that it is a sight to behold, but the golden ratio mathematically proves just how beautiful and photogenic the Cathedral of Saint Paul truly is.
