Minnesota Dog Attack Leads to Surgeries for Young Girl

Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen said deputies responded to the report of a child in need of medical care after being bitten by a dog on January 26 in the small town of Ghent, which is about eight miles northwest of Marshall.

Investigators determined three mixed-breed pitbull dogs attacked a six-year-old girl while she was at the home of her babysitter. She was taken to a local hospital before being rushed to a hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

The GoFundMe Fundraiser says young Zoey Winter needed surgery the day after the attack. She suffered severe injuries to her right ear and had multiple bite wounds on her arms, legs and sides.

Zoey will need to have at least one more surgery in the coming weeks, according to the fundraiser.

2 Dogs Quarantined After Biting Young Minnesota Girl Deemed Dangerous

Wallen says the dogs don’t belong to the babysitter. They’re owned by a 43-year-old woman who was at the home at the time of the attack.

Authorities placed the dogs into 10-day quarantine, which Wallen says is standard procedure following a biting incident.

On the day following the attack, two of the three dogs were deemed to be dangerous, according to Wallen. Their owner was given a 14-day window to appeal the ruling.

Wallen said the Lyon County Attorney’s Office will review the investigation for charging consideration.
