Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced that he will once again close all bars in the state's largest city.

Starting Saturday, August 1st at 5 PM all bars in Minneapolis will be required to close "indoor bar areas for regular service." The citywide closure will affect distilleries, taprooms, and restaurants with an indoor bar area.

On Facebook, the Mayor said, "By focusing on known hot beds for congregation and community spread, we can help keep Minneapolis trends stable. That commitment to public health gives us the best shot at both protecting frontline workers – a disproportionate share of whom are people of color – and avoiding more sweeping measures like full closures."

The bars will remain closed until he decides to let the emergency declaration expire. All bars in the state of Minnesota were closed on March 27th by Governor Walz, they were allowed to slowly start opening again on June 1st with outdoor service, and limited indoor seating was allowed starting on June 10th. Now all bars in Minneapolis are back to square one again.

In a press conference to explain the new order, the Mayor said that Minneapolis has about a 9% positive test rate right now, which is higher than the current 5% rate statewide. He also pointed out that there have been a handful of outbreaks associated with bars in the city.
