Police Rescue Fisherman Stuck In Quicksand In Minnesota
Quicksand is not something you encounter very often. I remember quicksand being a big deal as a kid. We saw it in a lot of movies and cartoons, but rarely have we encountered it in real life.
Earlier this spring, a man was rescued from quicksand on the shores of Lake Michigan. A man and a woman were on a date when he sank into sand where dredging had occurred. Talk about an embarrassing first date, right?
A similar situation happened in Chaska, Minnesota. A man was fishing with friends when he fell into a creek. They called 911, saying he couldn't swim or get out of the creek. Friends met the responding officers and guided them to the location of their stuck friend.
He was very stuck in the mud, but remained calm. (Hey, that's what they told us to do as kids with quicksand!) They threw the man a life jacket to put on for safety. They also threw him a rope.
They then brought in a ladder to lower down the steep embankment.
Police officers made a human chain, holding on to each other to prevent anyone else from slipping down the steep hill.
You can see in the photo below the kind of slope they were dealing with. Not to mention, it was slippery and loose ground.
The Chaska Police Department eventually was able to get the man out of the quicksand and back to safety. The police remind you that quicksand is real. It's not like in the movies where it will completely suck you under, but it can make you immobile and be a very dangerous situation.
