Jail Scam Making The Rounds In Minnesota
Yup, here we go again. It was only a matter of time before another scam popped up, this one being just a few hours from the Duluth area.
There's seemingly nothing scammers won't do, with a recent scam using a missing child as a ruse to trick people on social media.
That scam was reported in Bemidji and this most recent scam happens to be circulating in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
As mentioned, Brooklyn Center isn't too far from our neck of the woods, meaning this scam could pop up here any day now.
This scam is for people being released from jail, with the local sheriff's office in the area saying that scammers are keeping a good watch on those being released from custody so they can prey on them.

Here's how it works: someone being released from jail gets a phone call with a 612 area code. The person on the phone says they are Sgt. Strickland with local law enforcement and that you owe them payment.
With so many scams going on at once, it is hard to keep track of what is and isn't legitimate. Also, if you are being released from jail, you might fall for this scam thinking if you don't make the payment, you could get sent back.

The scammer then tells the person who picked up the phone that they need to bring $850 bucks to a kiosk in the area then make an appointment to get an ankle monitor put on.
The scammer then promises the large chunk of cash is just a deposit and part of the money will be refunded after court. What?!
Obviously, this is a scam. The kiosk should have been the first red flag. The scammer takes your money and you never see it again. Stay safe out there.
