I love getting out on the hiking trails around Minnesota. We have some pretty amazing places to explore all around our state!

There's one trail, though, that I had never heard of before, and I've never seen anything like it. If you're someone who gets claustrophobic, this trail may not be for you.

Kadunce River Wayside Trail, Grand Marais, MN

It's called the Kadunce River Wayside Trail. It's just a few miles outside of Grand Marais, and it's part of the Superior Hiking Trail.

The main hiking trail is labeled as 'easy' according to All Trails. But that's not the one we're talking about today.

The trail we're talking about takes you down into the river gorge, and you'll be walking in the river pretty much the whole way.

As you're hiking through the river gorge, there are points when the rock walls can get almost 100 feet high, according to Only in Your State, and pretty close together.

How to Find the River Gorge Hiking Trail On the Kadunce River Hiking Trail

If you're looking to access this trail, you start in the same place where you would start the normal, 'easy' trail, which is from a wayside stop along Highway 61.

After going along the main trail for a bit, you'll come to a fork in the road where you'll be able to get down into the river.

What to Consider Before Hiking a River Gorge

I've seen a few pictures and videos of people hiking the river trail, and it looks amazing! However, there are some important things to consider before you start your trek:

1. Are the water levels high?

2. Is there rain in the forecast?

If the water levels are high and/or there's rain in the forecast, don't do it. That can make for some seriously treacherous and dangerous hiking.

What about hiking the trail in the winter? You can absolutely do that! I might even be easier because the river will be somewhat frozen. Just make sure to bring the correct equipment (like snowshoes or crampons).
