With spring starting to wind down and summer being right around the corner, Minnesotans who love the outdoors know that time is running out on finding these Minnesota morsels on the forest floor. Morel mushrooms. Some people love them, others not so much. One group of Minnesotans went out earlier this week and walked out of the woods with around 1,500 of the tasty fungi.

A Massive Haul Of Morel Mushrooms

According to the folks over at Outdoor Life, a Bemidji-area family recently went morel hunting in the woods and came out with roughly 1,500 of them after they stumbled across a literal honey hole of these tasty treats.

John Holmgren, his wife Ashley, and friends went out on Monday in search of morel mushrooms and found more than enough. Holmgren told Outdoor Life earlier this week that his 'luck' was more about two things. Those things were "knowing where and what to look for, and waiting for ideal picking conditions."

Want To Get In On The Morel Hunt?

It's less about 'hunting' morels than it is knowing where they like to grow, and in what conditions. Here are some tips for hunting morels during the month of May.

The weather plays a big factor in your quest for morel mushrooms the ideal weather would be a stretch of days with highs in the 60s, overnight temperatures between 45 and 55, and warmer rainfall with sunny days to follow.

The next thing you should be doing is looking around certain types of trees, including:

  • Elm
  • Ash
  • Older Apple
  • Poplar

Finally, slow down as you are walking through the woods, as you don't want to miss any.

Old Wives Tale Or Fact?

Growing up, my grandpa was big into morel hunting, and he always told us grandkids that when lilacs bloom, morels usually start popping, and I'm starting to see lilacs bloom.

Happy hunting!
