How cool is this?!

Country singer Luke Combs has an absolutely massive hit on his hands with the cover of the classic 1988 Tracy Chapman song 'Fast Car' that he released earlier this year. Combs has frequently and publicly declared that the Tracy Chapman single has long been one of his all-time favorite songs.

The cover has been something he has performed during live shows for a number of years, but he finally released a studio version of the song as part of his March 2023 album "Gettin' Old", then put the song out as a single in April of this year. The song rocketed to the top of the country and pop charts, growing Luke's fanbase beyond his normal country music boundaries and introducing a whole new generation of fans to Chapman's song.

During his May 13, 2023 tour stop at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Combs performed the song for a stadium packed with a massive crowd of cheering fans, encouraging them to sing along with "one of his favorite songs of all time".

Donning a Minnesota Vikings hat, the performance Combs gave to the crowd at US Bank Stadium was captured by his team to be used as the "official live video" for the song on his YouTube channel. After being published only a couple of days ago, the video has seen over 3 million views, and is one of the video platform's top trending videos.

Pretty cool, right? If you were there, did you see yourself in the footage of the crowd?

In his rendition of the song, Combs held true to the original lyrics written by Chapman, even preserving the line "I work in the market as a checkout girl". While Luke and Tracy have yet to actually talk to each other since the release of Luke's cover, the two have publicly exchanged words through the media.

Chapman commented to Billboard earlier this month, saying I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”

In a separate Billboard interview, Luke shared some love for Tracy and appreciation for a shout-out from her, saying. "The success of my cover is unreal and I think it’s so cool that Tracy is getting recognized and has reached new milestones. I love that she is out there feeling all the love and that she gave me a shout-out! Thank you, Tracy!"

The success of Luke's cover also created an interesting piece of music history, with the music organization ASCAP sharing that Chapman has become the first black woman as a song's sole writer to reach #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay charts.
