The last few years have seen an influx of car wash businesses popping up in the Twin Ports area. That number looks to go up again as a new business gets ready to build in the Duluth area.

The car wash landscape in the Twin Ports area had been pretty consistent for many years until Tommy's Express broke ground on East Central Entrance for that company's expansion into Northern Minnesota in 2021.

Then Mister Car Wash began construction for their location near Texas Roadhouse further west on Central Entrance. They have yet to open, but they have a similar business model to that of Tommy's Express, offering the option for a subscription plan with a variety of car cleaning options.

Now, as was shared just yesterday (October 9) by the Duluth News Tribune, a third new car wash is eying up the Duluth area. The DNT story details that plans for a new tunnel-style car wash in Duluth went before the Duluth Planning Commission for approval.

The commission voted unanimously in favor of the plan, which means it's just a matter of time before it opens. Here's what we know so far.

What do we know about this new car wash?

As I mentioned, it is a tunnel-style car wash, which is structurally like Tommy's Express or Mister Car Wash.

The proposal was for the address 4250 Haines Road in Duluth, which is currently an empty lot next to Johnson Mertz Appliance and across Hanes Road from Outback Steakhouse. It was previously an Elks Lodge.

The local architecture firm Arola Architecture is involved in the planning and construction of what will be an 8,100-square-foot facility with a capacity to queue up to 15 vehicles on the property without blocking traffic on Haines Road.

The proposed name of the business is called "Tanner's Express", which was revealed in some planning documents. The property is also labeled as Tanner's Express on places like Google Maps, even though the project just received approval this week.

Looking around online, the company does have a website, though it is just a landing page with no information on it besides a message that says "Quick & Friendly Car Wash".

This seemed to indicate it is a start-up, rather than a chain brand like Tommy's or Mister Car Wash.

Not much else is known about the new business beyond this, but we'll keep an eye on things and share more as it becomes available.
