The 2026 Winter Olympic Games are now officially in the books. As a Minnesotan, there was a lot to root for! Minnesota was one of the most-represented states on all of Team USA.

While there were athletes participating in a number of different sports from Minnesota, both men's and women's hockey and curling were among the most dominant places where Minnesota was represented.

Watching the Olympic Games, it's easy to find yourself feeling motivated to try some of the events. While I like to think I'm reasonably athletic, I'm not about to try ice dancing (I'd end up on my face) or that crazy uphill skiing thing (Skimo) that I feel would kill me.

Curling, on the other hand, feels a lot more approachable. Many curling clubs have a bar, and there are a lot of casual leagues for people of all ages around the state. Drinking and casual sports? Count me in.

As my co-host, Tony, and I talked about the Duluth representation in Curling on Team USA, someone from the Duluth Curling Club heard us discussing it and decided to invite us to try it out! Huge shoutout to Ray Lopez and his daughter for the invitation - and the lesson.

Coolest part yet? This is the same sheet of ice Olympians have played on! Thankfully, they weren't there, because...yikes, we weren't good. Haha

Personally, I've curled a couple of times in college. Since then? My ice-related sports experiences have been ice fishing and trying not to fall over on my way to my car in the winter. It's been a long time, but I know a few of the real basics.

Meanwhile, my co-host Tony has never curled before. He also has a legacy of not getting along with ice. Want to know more? Just ask him. Let's just say ice has led to some injuries.

Anyway, during the course of our one-hour lesson on the ice, I got some refreshers on the fundamentals while Tony got the how-to's the Duluth Curling Club does an awesome job of providing during their "Learn to Curl" events.

Among the biggest lessons for the two of us was how not to fall over from slipping on the slide for under one of your feet, how to gauge the "weight" or strength of your throw, how physical "sweeping" is, and (sorry Tony) how it isn't a good idea to lift up the rock during a delivery.

In all, we have a lot to work on if we want to be competitive at any level. The good news is that the game welcomes people of all ages and skill levels to play!

You may have noticed the stick Tony used at one point to deliver a rock toward the end of the video. That's one example of how adaptable the game is to fit people of a variety of ability levels. We got to try some of those just to get a feel for the sport.

Thanks again to the Duluth Curling Club for the experience and the memories! If ever you have the chance to give curling a try, do it! Go into it with an open mind and don't expect to be a pro right away, and you'll have a blast.

2026 Winter Olympic Athletes With Minnesota Ties

Minnesota is among the leaders in the United States in the number of athletes representing Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy. With 26 Minnesota natives on Team USA and additional athletes with ties to the Land of 10,000 Lakes (such as competing collegiately or professionally for a Minnesota sports team), a total of 36 competitors on Team USA have connections to Minnesota. Here's a look at who they all are, where they're from, and what events they're participating in.
