A voluntary recall on a popular frozen fruit product has shoppers across the country checking their freezers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is sharing that Scenic Fruit Company has issued the recall for frozen strawberries that were processed in their facility and sold under a variety of different national brand names in stores like Aldi, Costco, Trader Joe's, and others. Minnesota and Wisconsin locations of those retail stores are included.

According to the information from the U.S. FDA, the concern is with Hepatitis A. An outbreak of the disease has the potential to be linked back to contact with the recalled product, although the FDA is reporting that "Hepatitis A has not been detected on this product". The voluntary recall has been issued though "out of an abundance of caution".

Humans can catch Hepatitis A through contact with the disease; that contact can come from contaminated food sources.

While symptoms and complications can vary from case to case, Hepatitis A has the potential to be very serious - especially for those with pre-existing conditions. The liver disease "can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months". In the case of serious infections, Hepatitis A "can progress to liver failure".

Here is a summary of what brands of frozen strawberries are involved in the recall, some packaging information, and UPC Codes. The full list - including the specific Best By Dates you need to look for are available on the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations website. It's recommended that you double-check against that information as it gets updated:

  • Simply Nature - sold at Aldi - UPC Code 4099100256222
  • Kirkland Signature - sold at Costco - UPC Code 96619140404
  • Trader Joe's Tropical Fruit Blend (pineapple, bananas, strawberries, and mango) - UPC Code 00511919. This is included in the recall because it includes the affected strawberries

Once again, the full list and all of the specific information is available on the FDA's website.

Consumers who believe that they have the affected frozen strawberries in their possession are urged to throw them away or return them to the store from where they were purchased for a full refund. Additional questions can be directed to the Scenic Fruit Company.  A recall link is available on their website.
