On Tuesday morning the Ice Sculpture at Barkers Island came crashing down.  It just so happens that a writer, Mitch Miller, from the New York times was doing a story on the project when disaster struck.  Here is his take on what happened as an outsider to our small city.

At $30,000, his Lake Superior Ice Project was not cheap for its major patrons, which included Superior itself. But the city saw the effort as a point of civic pride and as a bid, perhaps quixotic, to attract visitors in a season when many would rather thaw out in Miami. And as the structure grew layer upon frozen layer into a 66-foot tower, the residents embraced it. Dog walkers stopped by daily to check on its progress, officials installed signs directing visitors to the attraction and, later this month, it was to be the centerpiece of a series of synchronized light shows.

Then, just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, a day that Mr. Hanson had proclaimed “perfect” for building, the crackling started.

The writer sympathizes with the disappointment many faced when the structure came down, even capturing images of Hanson looking in shock.  He was also able to capture stills of the collapse.

Since Tuesday, the City of Superior has decided to make the best out of the situation and continue with trying to make some sort of sculpture again so they can continue with the planned winter festival.
