The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently answered the question about what to do if you find wildlife babies in places you don't want them. In the spring, mommas may make their nest in places like boats, campers, trailers, and outbuildings. Tampering with the nest or removing it can cause stress and may lead to the babies being separated from their mothers which is never a good thing.

The DNR says that you should do a few things:

  • First, give it time. Once an area is disturbed usually the mother will move the nest and babies out of that area. Sometimes this occurs at night or during the day, depending on the animal.
  • If you have a family of raccoons under your boat cover, leave it uncovered over night and leave a radio playing. They should clear out overnight.
  • If you find a nest of baby squirrels under your car hood, you should put on a pair of leather gloves and remove the entire nest with babies inside of it. Place it in a carboard box nearby. The mother will move the babies during the daytimes, so make sure you keep the area clear of anyone or pets.

If there is a situation where animal babies are orphaned, you can bring them to a local animal rehabilitation center, but their best chance of survival is with their mother. A lot of times people may think an animal has been abandoned by its parents, but often times that's not the case. They outline different species and their behaviors so you can truly understand if they have been orphaned before potentially making things much worse.
