Landfill near capacity - closed to the public.

They closed the Superior Landfill on Moccasin Mike Road to the public last fall. It's because the landfill is reaching its capacity. It's been built up over the years like a pyramid, and it's at the point now where there isn't enough room at the top of it anymore to safely handle public traffic and garbage haulers.

We drove up the hill and past the spot where public dumping previously was. We went up, and up, and up until the skyline of Duluth emerged. I was shocked at the view and how high we were. I quickly snapped a photo.

It will be nearly 800 feet tall when it closes.

I talked to some sources with the city, and they said that it's currently 760 feet tall, and by the time it closes, it will be 790 feet tall.

The dump is expected to continue to operate until 2026. At that point, the dump will be shut down and covered.
