History Of Solon Springs Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center – Our Town

When you think of Solon Springs, you think of the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center, a non-profit amphitheater that makes the community a tourist destination. I was in awe of the beautiful venue the first time I watched a concert there years ago. I would recommend the unique experience to you and your family, and to any artists that haven't had the pleasure of performing there. The combination of red pine logs that were used to construct the amphitheater and the limitless sky as your ceiling makes the entertainment of the evening unforgettable.

In 1992, they were looking for a way to boost the economy of Solon Springs. Frank and Mary Giesen had a vision of the amphitheater and worked with a 12 member Board of Directors who organized fundraisers and enlisted the help of the Wisconsin Arts Board. Together they researched other venues and eventually, with the help of in-kind contributions and financial gifts, Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center was a reality. When you visit Lucius Woods, you'll appreciate the thousands of hours volunteers put into the project.

The amphitheater sits at the base of a natural bowl and is the property of Douglas County. The Board hired a firm out of Minneapolis to construct the amphitheater. After all, it was going to be used for concerts, they needed the best sound resonance possible. As I mentioned earlier, the concert shell is crafted from red pine logs. The interior is made of tamarack panels. The wood was harvested locally in Gordon, WI.

It's the 19th Summer Concert Series season and this week-end you can enjoy the Dixieland Jazz with the Dukes of Dixieland with Luther Kent. It will be an outstanding show with the Grammy nominated Dukes of Dixieland and guest singer Luther Kent has been inducted into the "Louisiana Hall of Fame" and the "Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame".

Here's good information to know about concert day. The gate to the grounds will open at 6p. Remember to bring your blankets or lawn chairs to sit on (there are chairs available for the elderly and people with special needs only.

Thanks to the Solon Springs Lions Club you can enjoy brats, hot dogs and snacks. The following are prohibited in the concert fenced area: smoking, pets and glass containers of any type.

Getting there is easy!  Take US Highway 53 to business Highway 53, approx. 40 minutes south of Duluth/Superior. Our entrance is directly across from the Dairy Queen in the heart of Solon Springs. You can park in downtown Solon Springs. A shuttle bus is available to take you to and from the park. There is no fee for the shuttle, it is a FREE service.
