A traffic-slowing trend that can be found in places like Iceland, Germany and the Boston area is now in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and it's quite a sight to see.

The City Of Grand Rapids posted the picture above on their Facebook page to help introduce their new 3D crosswalk:

Please yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Especially when the crosswalk is elevated! Check out the new 3D crosswalk on Pokegama Avenue and 9th Street North.

I can definitely see how this would would be effective!  My only fear is that it's too effective.  Someone who is not aware of what a 3D crosswalk is might see this and slam on their brakes and become a traffic hazard for those driving behind.

That being said, I think they should paint these around every school in the United States.  Wouldn't it also be great if school buses could project a 3D image across the road when they stop to drop of kids?  Anything we can do to keep kids safe is worth exploring.
