The old saying goes that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  The Duluth Police Departments wants you to be aware of online "Help Wanted" scams that could end with you having money and personal information stolen.

According to Duluth Police, the scam starts when criminals post imaginary job ads for openings as payment processing agents, finance support clerks, mystery shoppers, etc. They may send you an online application and if filled out, they can collect personal information. They may also ask you for your bank account number and give you instructions on transferring money. Once you realize this is fraudulent activity, they will have involved you in money transferring scam.

The Federal Trade Commission offers tips if you think you’re involved in a money transfer scam:

• stop transferring money
• close your bank account
• notify your bank and the wire transfer service about the scam
• report it to the FTC

A safe practice is to never share personal information online or over the phone, especially when someone is making promises that sound too good to be true.

Reputable banks and businesses respect your security just as much as you do and they would never ask for personal information in such a manner.  If you sense something isn't right, stop communication immediately and report them to authorities.
