Duluth Police Department Warns Of Holiday Weekend Thefts

The Duluth Police Department wants you to stay safe this holiday weekend.

With a popular holiday weekend around the corner and many people headed out of town, thieves will be on the lookout for easy targets.

The Duluth Police Department is offering up some tips on their Facebook page to help you keep your belongings safe and secure if you're headed out of town.

Here are a few of their tips:

• Make it look like you're home by doing things like keeping your lights on, having your lawn freshly cut, put your lights on a timer, temporarily cancel your package delivery and/or arrange for your neighbors to pick up your packages and mail.
• Make sure your home is secure by locking your windows, lock all of your doors and arrange with a neighbor to check on your house.
• Fake it until you make it by trimming trees and shrubs in front of your home, illuminating easy-to-see places inside and post stickers saying your home is being watched even if it is not.
• Don't post photos while you're on vacation but instead wait until you get back.
• Put all outdoor objects indoors until you get back.
• Don't leave any keys outside, like many do with a spare key.
• Don't put anything of value in the trash.

Recently, the Superior Police Department warned residents in the Northland about spring cleaning scams and how to avoid falling victim to them.
