Drunk Driver Drove Wrong Way Into Hermantown Construction Zone On Hwy 53
Late Thursday night the Hermantown Police Department shared pictures and video of an accident that occurred on Miller Trunk Highway near the Highway 194 intersection. A gray sedan was traveling south in the northbound lane when it drove into a construction zone.
The vehicle came to a stop after driving into the torn up section of highway that construction crews have been working on. The car appears to have damage in multiple areas as a result. Fortunately no-one was injured.
Hermantown Police Officer Stracek arrested a female driver after her blood alcohol tested at .30, which is over three times the legal limit of .08. It was the third of four DWI arrests made by officer Stracek on Thursday night as part of a special DWI enforcement patrol.
Previously the Hermantown Police Department had to remind the public not to drive around barricades in this construction project area. In just one week they had stopped 70 vehicles for attempting to drive around the barricades, some going in the ditch. This was sober drivers in most cases as well, which is puzzling.
The Highway 53/194 Intersection project began in May and will cost 2.5 million dollars. It involves R-CUT work on the intersection, along with creating a roundabout on the Midway RD/ Hwy 194 intersection. R-CUT stands for restricted crossing u-turn, which is put in place to make the intersection safer.
