When the school year begins every year, the Minnesota State Patrol reminds drivers to watch out for school buses. If they have their amber lights flashing, traffic from both directions must stop to allow kids to board or exit the bus safely.

Unfortunately, every year drivers ignore Minnesota law and drive right passed school buses that have lights flashing. Not only is this dangerous action illegal, but it puts children's lives at stake.

If authorities can catch a driver who breaks this law, the charges they face depend on the circumstances of the incident.

They can be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $1,000, and up to 90 days in jail, or a gross misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $3,000 and up to 1 year in jail.  A driver's license can be suspended or revoked for a gross misdemeanor conviction or a second-time misdemeanor conviction.

This week, one such incident took place and thanks to video captured by the school bus, the public was able to help authorities catch the driver.

Truck Makes Horrific Pass By A Minnesota School Bus

According to authorities, on Friday, December 20, at approximately 3:44 p.m., a truck went around a stopped school bus, on the right side, as the bus was stopping to pick up kids at 7931 Highway 169, near Polar Drive in Wuori Township, which is located in the city of Virginia. The truck and school bus were traveling southbound on Highway 169, toward Highway 53. The school bus had its amber lights flashing.

The truck also crashed into a mailbox at this address as it went around the school bus on the right and did not stop. You can watch the incident in the video below.

Authorities reached out to the public to help locate the driver and the truck, which was reportedly a white Dodge Ram one-ton dually, four-door pickup truck with a silver toolbox in the truck bed. The license plate was unknown at the time.
