ORIGINAL STORY: October 25, 2021
A popular brand of room spray sold at Walmart is being recalled due to it's potential link to four cases of a deadly bacterial illness that's not often seen in the United States. Minnesota is one of the four states that have seen confirmed cases linked back to the product. Two people have died already.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that Walmart is recalling more than 3,900 bottles of its popular Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray With Gemstones room spray. The cause for the recall is a link to one of the four patients infected with the bacterial illness.
At the present time, the four confirmed cases were located in Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota, and Texas. "Two of the people, including a child, have died".
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and news sources, a bottle of the Better Homes & Gardens room spray in question was found in the home of one of the infected patients and that bottle "was found to be contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria called Burkholderia pseudomallei". A spokesperson with the Consumer Product Safety Commission shared that "Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria are usually never found in household products, at least not in the United States".
Most cases of contamination with the deadly bacteria usually come from people who have traveled outside of the United States. On average, "about a dozen cases tend to be diagnosed" in this country each year. "But four cases in a matter of months in 2021, particularly those who never traveled outside of the country, caught the attention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention".
Very quickly, the investigation turned up that each of the positive cases for the deadly bacteria had a bottle of the room spray in their home. That's when the voluntary recall effort started.
Consumers who have bottles of the Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray With Gemstones should discontinue using it. The CPSC is instructing people to return the product to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
