One Chance In Your Life To See This Mt Everest Sized Comet Over Minnesota + Wisconsin
I'm a big nerd and I geek out about this kind of stuff. There's a comet that orbits the sun every 71 years, making this a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see it.
Devil Comet
The 12P/Pons-Brooks comet is also known as the Devil Comet because it has two horns that protrude from it. The comet is about the size of Mount Everest and frequently erupts with explosions that look like flare-ups.
Why does this comet erupt?
Earth.com says the comet is composed of a nucleus of ice, dust, and small rocky particles. When it gets closer to the sun, the comet warms up, pressure builds up and it ejects gases and ice.
Where do you look to see it?
Meteorologist Brandon Weatherz from WDIO says to look about 20 degrees above the west-northwest horizon.
You can see it now, but it's expected to be the brightest and visible to the naked eye on March 30th and March 31st.
Right now, your best chance is to use a telescope or binoculars and look toward the constellation Pisces in the early evening.
Unique Chance To See It During Solar Eclipse
The Great North American Eclipse will happen over much of North America on April 8th, 2024. A path from Texas To Maine will be in total darkness for a few minutes during the eclipse. This presents a unique chance to see the comet during the middle of the day.
