Time to get bundled up, leave the car in the garage, and let that school bus drive on by because Wednesday, February 5 is Winter Walk To School Day in Minnesota.

Minnesota Safe Routes to School promotes the event as a terrific way to get exercise, reduce traffic congestion, and enjoy the season while spending quality time with family, friends or a group of people.

They expect more 70 Minnesota schools and hundreds of students to participate in the 2020 Minnesota Winter Walk to School Day.

Motorists across the state should be on the look out for a higher number of pedestrians and plan on stopping for people crossing at every corner, even those without marked crosswalks or stop lights. When driving through a school zone, slow down, scan the road for people walking and be alert for students.

If you or your school plan on participating, you can submit your story and photos to dave.cowan@state.mn.us, with the the Minnesota Safe Routes To School office, and compete for the Golden Snow Boot Award.

Temperatures across the Northland are expected to be in the single digits Wednesday morning, so throw on an extra layer, make sure everyone has a warm hat, and enjoy a brisk walk.
