Traffic And Sidewalk Updates On The Bong Bridge You Should Know
The Bong Bridge is undergoing some maintenance work that has been impacting traffic. Several projects are being done before the Bong Bridge becomes the only bridge between Duluth and Superior. That will take place in early 2027, when the Blatnik Bridge is closed and replaced.
Project Overview
Crews are painting spot locations of the existing steel arch structure in the center span of the bridge. They are also repairing concrete surfaces and spot locations. They are removing and replacing the three rubber strip seals of the center tied arch.
They are also replacing the street lighting on the Minnesota side of the bridge and on the Minnesota ramps. On the Wisconsin side, they are replacing lighting on the approach. They'll seal the concrete on the entire deck and place new pavement markings on the bridge.

Traffic Impacts
Traffic is down to one lane in both directions of the Bong Bridge, and soon there will be some temporary closures. South 46th Avenue West from I-35 to the eastbound US 2 will be closed from 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, and 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5.
