Bitter Cold Breaks Records Across The Northland + Surrounding Areas
Each morning, Ken & I talk to WDIO meteorologist Taylor Dayton around 7:30 on The Breakfast Club. He tells us what we can expect in the weather department that day. Lately, we've been giving him a hard time because it's been so cold. Although it has been brutal this month, I was surprised to hear him say that we saw record lows across the Northland this past Sunday (April 8). I guess I didn't think things were this dire but I was wrong.
According to National Weather Service data, several areas in the Northland - and other parts of Minnesota & Wisconsin - hit record low temperatures.
- Duluth dropped to 2 degrees Sunday morning. The record low for the day was 5 degrees, last set back in 1974. The new record ties the sixth coldest low temperature for the month of April ever. (The coldest? April 3, 1954 and April 4th, 1975 when temperatures dropped to 5 below.)
- Brainerd also saw record lows this weekend, as temperatures plummeted to 0 degrees early Sunday a.m. This tied for the seventh coldest low temperature for the month of April. The record low is 12 below, set on April 1st of 1975.
- Hibbing was also frigid too, recording a low of 4 below. This ties for the third coldest low temperature for the month. The coldest it has ever been in April is 6 below back in 1954.
- International Falls hit a record low of 3 degrees below Sunday morning. This ties for the ninth coldest low for April. The coldest? 14 below.
- Eau Claire saw a record low of 4 degrees, breaking the previous record for the day of 9 degrees set back in 1997.
- Appleton, Wisconsin hit a low of 10 degrees, making it the fourth coldest April temperature ever and the latest date a temperature of 10 degrees or less was ever recorded.
The Old Farmer's Almanac did predict we'd see cold through the first week of the month. The good news is, if you believe in the folklore, things will start to warm up and calm down a bit.
Happy Spring!
