
Tom has been a sports anchor since 1989. Born in Milwaukee but raised in St. Paul, Tom has the ideal background to cover the Packers and Vikings, Badgers and Gophers, Timberwolves and Bucks, Twins and Brewers, and all kinds of Minnesota and Wisconsin sports and athletes. Tom received his undergraduate degree from Winona State University and earned his master's degree in communications at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. In his "spare" time, Tom provides radio play-by-play for the defending National Champion University of Minnesota, Duluth Women's Hockey Team. According to Tom, the scope of Northland's NewsCenter sports coverage is quite broad. "We attempt to cover as much local sports as possible. Scores, highlights, and sports with a story. We like to profile as many of the Northland athletes as we can. Bringing the viewers to the action and letting them experience the emotion of high school, college, and pro sports." Tom was the TV Play-by-Play announcer for both of the UMD National Championship teams last year on My 9, the 2010 UMD Football team and the 2011 UMD Men’s hockey team. In all, he has been the UMD radio and TV announcer for 25 years and has been the broadcaster for 8 UMD National championship teams. Over the years, he has done Bulldog football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s hockey at the Division One level. Tom is also an award winning sports reporter as well, having won several radio and TV reporting honors. The latest, was a regional RTNDA Play-by-Play award for his call of the 1st UMD Hockey game at Amsoil Arena vs North Dakota. He has also won a Regional Emmy for his Live TV broadcast coverage of the Minnesota State High School Boys hockey tournament as a rink side reporter. Some of the others include awards for reporting on Minor League baseball and one on a local area football coach.
